Brisbane has been ranked the world’s best city to raise a family in 2026, according to the Compare the Market Best Cities to Raise a Family Index 2026. The Queensland capital recorded a score of 6.457, placing it ahead of London (5.992), Auckland (5.460), Helsinki (5.305) and Sydney (5.239).
According to the article, Brisbane’s leading position was driven by its overall performance across family-related living indicators. It had the highest number of parks and green spaces per capita among the 50 cities surveyed, with 84.89 parks and playgrounds per 100,000 people. Brisbane was also ranked second globally for safety.

The River City’s green spaces and parks, relative affordability, and cheaper cost of living including transportation saw it rein supreme.
Affordability was another major advantage. The article stated that families in Brisbane spend about $4,827.06 per month ($3,390.70 USD), compared with $6,176.23 per month in Sydney ($4,162.10 USD). This means Brisbane was nearly $1,350 cheaper per month than Sydney. It was also noted that Brisbane was nearly $1,647 USD per month cheaper than London.
The report also linked Brisbane’s affordability advantage to lower transport costs, including 50 cent public transport fares in the most populated area of South East Queensland. Combining affordability, safety, green space and family-friendly policies, Brisbane ranked first overall in the 2026 index.
